How Backlinks Affect Domain Value
RushGrade · October 21, 2026
An older domain can have value beyond the words in the name. Links from other websites may create historical authority signals, referral traffic, brand mentions, or evidence that the domain previously supported a real site.
Referring domains matter more than raw link totals
Thousands of links from one low-quality website can be less meaningful than a smaller number of links from independent, reputable sites. Referring-domain diversity is therefore an important signal.
History can help or hurt
A long history is not automatically positive. Domains previously used for spam, malware, doorway pages, or manipulative link schemes can carry risk. Evaluation should combine authority, history, link quality, and spam indicators rather than relying on a single score.
No third-party metric equals Google ranking
SEO authority scores are estimates. Google's internal ranking systems are not exposed as a public PageRank API. A responsible domain-grade product should make that distinction clear.
